Nowadays, educational methods and tools are continually changing thanks to the fast progress of modern technologies; platforms for e-learning in medicine have been constructed, a few of them for histopathology training. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no updated platform as the one built within the framework of the HIPON project; the latter platform combines a virtual portfolio, a library of resources and case studies’ data banks along with e-learning modules. HIPON platform has resulted in an autonomous well-structured and user-friendly, multi-language e-learning system, specifically focusing on histopathology, and offering practical experience to students, researchers and professionals in the field of Medicine.
The relevant project entitled “ICT e-modules on HistoPathology: a valuable online tool for students, researchers and professionals - HIPON”, and co-financed by the Lifelong Learning Program of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, The Commission of the European Union, has been launched at the beginning of 2013. The basic concept underlying HIPON’s methodology is to follow mixed learning pathways, supported by a mass amount of case data, and a rich variety of components of the ICT System; the latter combine e-modules, multimedia online games, glossary, and resources, such as virtual photo gallery and thematically divided resources. The contribution of modern visual technology through the use of virtual slides (figure), educative videos and enlargeable, microscopic high resolution images marked with informative comments is of vital importance; thus the project reasonably aims to teach its users how to think as expert pathologists, conveying experienced pathologists’ way of thinking, instead of mere information.
